One feature of visual scenes critical for navigation and survival is motion direction. Here, we detail how the direction of motion is encoded at the first stage of visual processing, the retina. We focus on how the direction-selective neurons in the mammalian retina compute direction, which cell types carry this information to the brain, and how direction-selective information contributes to central brain function and disease.
